During a media appearance ahead of former President Donald Trump’s rally in the Bronx, New York Governor Kathy Hochul referred to Trump fans as “clowns”. She said, “Well, I’ll tell you what won’t make a difference at all, Jake, and that’s for Donald Trump to be a ringleader and invite all his clowns to a place like the Bronx.” Hochul reiterated that New York would never support Trump for president, claiming that the state knows him better than anybody else and that he is “just for himself.” She expressed confidence that New York will continue to favor Joe Biden for president, as it has in the past1.
In reaction to Hochul’s remarks, the Trump team chastised her, claiming she was offended because President Trump was gathering audiences in her state that she could only dream of. They also stated that Democrats were in turmoil because Americans, notably Hispanics and Blacks, were realizing that Joe Biden and the Democratic Party had been taking advantage of them for decades1.
It’s worth mentioning that Trump, who has just visited the state for his hush money trial, feels he has a decent chance of winning New York in the 2018 election, despite the fact that the state has not voted Republican since 1984. A recent Siena College survey showed President Biden with a nine-point advantage over Trump in the state (47% to 38%), whereas Biden easily won the state in 2020 with 60.8%1.
Governor Hochul’s remarks have generated debate and highlighted the continuing political divides in New York involving Trump and his supporters2.
